Ehrwald is the biggest town in the Tiroler Zugspitz Arena, with fantastic views on the highest mountain the Zugspitze. This town has so much to offer for outdoor enthusiasts. With its location right at the foot of the Zugspitz mountain you just want (and need) to go on adventure. But where to start? In this blog you will find the 10 highlights in the beautiful area of Ehrwald.
1. HIGHLINE 179
Highline 179 is the attraction made for real daredevils, who aren’t afraid and in need of some adrenaline rushes. With a height of 114,6 meters and a length of 406 meters the bridge gained a place in the Guinness Book of Records as “Longest Tibet-style footbridge”. Not scared yet? Buy a ticket at the beginning of the bridge and enjoy the panoramic view and experience the sensation of a see-through bridge.
2. GO HIKING AROUND THE ZUGSPITZ MOUNTAIN
The Zugspitz arena in Tyrol is insanely beautiful and fits perfectly by the needs of hikers. It has everything a hiker wants: mountains, wildlife, mountain huts (with typical Austrian meals and beers), clear blue lakes and paths classified from beginner to extreme experienced. Some hikes that will fulfil your hiking heart are (sections of) the Adlerweg, the circular route via the Heiterwangersee, a climb to the Coburgerhütte via the Seebensee and last but not least descending from Gipfelhaus Grübigstein to the Fernsteinsee.
3. EARN YOUR HIKING PIN FOR THE ZUGSPITZ ARENA
Hikaholics get ready! In the are of the Zugspitz arena you can get a ‘Hüttenpass’ (Mountain hut pass) at the local Tourist Information Center. With this pass you can earn your own hiking pin. In the passport you will find a total of 31 mountain huts where you can stamp your hiking pass in the region of the Tiroler Zugspitz Arena. There are five categories of hiking pins you can earn: Bronze, Silver, Gold, Alpine and Crystal. Get yourself a hiking map and put your hiking shoes on. Go get that pin!
4. VISIT THE PARTNACHKLAMM
The Partnach Gorge (Klamm is Gorge in German) is a deep gorge where the mountain stream, the Partnach, flows through. The over 700 meters long and over 80 meters deep gorge is located near the town of Garmisch-Partenkirchen. You can only reach the gorge by foot. The hike starts at the Olympic stadion, where you will follow a wide asphalt road. It’s an easy hike to the gorge. The Partnach is a river filled with glacier water from the mountains, which gives an ear deafening sound because of the power of the stream through the small gorge. For the way back you can choose between an easy route, or you can extend your hike as you wish.
5. GET BREAKFAST AT FEINBÄCKEREI RABITSCH
Heaven. This bakery called Rabitsch is located in the town of Ehrwald on the road to the Brentalm. The bäckerei has the best pastries you will ever taste and the best smelling bread rolls. People are waiting in long lines in front of it to get breakfast or take away lunch.
6. REST DAY AT GARMISCH PARTENKIRCHEN
Want a rest day between all the hiking and other outdoor adventures? Go to Garmisch-Partenkirchen! It is a place in Southern Germany which is full of historical paintings on the houses. The city center is filled with restaurants, boutiques, outdoor- and fashion shops. Just take a stroll and enjoy the beautiful architecture.
7. GO TO AN ALM WITH CABLE CARS
Do you want to enjoy the amazing views, but not able to hike/bike that far? Book a cable car to a mountain top. The ride itself is already a lot of fun and within minutes you are someplace beautiful. And it is even more fun if you go to a place with an alm. These alms/mountain huts are common along the trails. When visiting the huts, you will get an authentic Austrian feeling. You have to try traditional Austrian dishes served in these huts, because than you get the full Austrian experience.
8. TAKE A STROLL ALONG THE BANKS OF CLEAR BLUE MOUNTAIN LAKES
Mountain lakes are one of the prettiest. The combination of the clear blue waters, mountain ranges as far as you can see and the sound of clinging cowbells are such a pretty experience. Take a seat along the waterside and enjoy the moment. Just sitting there makes you feel at peace every time. The calming sounds of the water will bring you closer to nature. Stunning lakes in the area of Ehrwald are the Seebensee, Heiterwangersee and Plansee. If you can, go early! When the sun starts to rise the lakes get a magical touch with the first sunbeams. On top of that you will avoid big crowds by going early, so you can shoot that amazing sunrise photo.
9. ENJOY THE NATIONAL COMFORT FOOD: KAISERSCHMARRN
Yummy yummy in your tummy. It’s sweet. It’s warm. And it’s super delicious. Kaiserschmarrn are made of a sort pancake mix, but are lighter and fluffier. It is the meal you want after a long day of hiking. It is the comfort food you are searching for when you are too tired to even move. So sit down, relax, enjoy the ambience of an alm, listen to the Tiroler music and eat your kaiserschmarrn with a mountain view.
10. PLAN B FOR VISITING THE ZUGSPITZ MOUNTAIN
Everyone wants to go to the top of the Zugspitz mountain. It’s the highest mountain of Germany and you have an amazing view from there. The downside: It is extremely crowdy. But there is a more quiet alternative: Gipfelhaus Grübigstein! In Lermoos you have to take two Grübig cable carts to a height of 2050 meters. You can enjoy the amazing view on the Zugspitz mountain range while sipping a cold beer or eating a hot meal in peace. At the Gipfelhaus start many cool hike and bike trails to follow.
